The mere mention of fumigation can initiate feelings of anxiety, conjuring images of circus-like tents full of strong fumes. Realistically, fumigation can actually bring great relief once the job is done.

If you have a pest problem that hasn’t subsided with regular treatments and preventative measures, your pest control technician may suggest fumigation to fully rid your property of the infestation. There’s no need to fear fumigation, as long as you know what to expect. Here are the basics.

Guide to Fumigation:

What is Fumigation?

Fumigation is a form of pest control used in large infestations where regular pest removal methods just aren’t enough. Fumigation uses aerosol pesticides known as fumigants to thoroughly eliminate pests within an enclosed space. It is particularly useful when it comes to pests that eat structures of your home that are difficult to get rid of entirely using conventional methods.

Fumigation Process

Fumigation can seem daunting at first, but the process is straightforward. Here is what to expect if your home needs to be fumigated:

  • You will need to remove any items you need from your home for up to a week and anything that could be damaged by fumigants.
  • Your home will be enclosed in a giant tent or system of tarps to completely seal off the property.
  • The entire space will be filled with gaseous pesticides that are held in the tent in order to permeate the property and kill pests.
  • Afterward, the tent will be removed and your home will need to air out before you can safely return.

How Long Does Fumigation Take?

It’s difficult to be away from home, even though home will be a lot more comfortable after treatment. The length of time for fumigation depends on the size of your home and the extent of the infestation.

Fumigants can be held in the sealed tent anywhere from a few hours to several days. You should take any items you will need for up to a week. A licensed fumigator should be able to provide an estimated time frame.

What Kind of Pests Does Fumigation Get Rid of?

Fumigation isn’t for every kind of pest, just the particularly stubborn and prolific ones. Fumigation treatment is especially used for pests that get within the structures of your home and wreak havoc, such as:

  • Drywood termites
  • Wood boring beetles
  • Bed bugs
  • Carpenter ants
  • Cockroaches
  • Rats
  • And more!
