Is a Wolf Spider a Threat?

Wolf spiders are generally not considered a significant threat to humans. While they possess venom to immobilize their prey, their bites are rarely dangerous to humans and typically result in minor discomfort similar to a bee sting. Most wolf spider species are non-aggressive and will only bite if provoked or threatened.

When Does a Wolf Spider Bite?

Wolf spiders only bite if provoked. After seeing one, it will first try to retreat, but if you attempt to trap it and it feels threatened, it is likely to strike back in self-defense.

What Are the Wolf Spider Prevention Tips

Understanding effective prevention strategies is key to keeping your home and surroundings safe from unwanted spider encounters.

Tip # 1. Lawn Cutter

You can deter wolf spiders by making changes to your yard’s environment. A cluttered yard attracts not only wolf spiders but also other types of spiders. Wolf spiders use yard debris as hiding places, making it harder for predators to find them. They also know that the bugs they eat use these hiding places as well. If you have items such as old tires, woodpiles, toys, or stored goods in your yard, move them approximately 20 feet away from exterior walls.

Tip #2. Moisture

The majority of bugs that wolf spiders eat are moisture pests. Wolf spiders are likely to be found in areas where water soaks into the ground for long periods, often in shaded spots that prevent drying. These spiders hunt in such areas and may even drink from puddles. By reducing moisture and humidity, you can help keep wolf spiders and moisture-loving pests away.

Tip #3. Seal Thing Up

Check your exterior walls and foundation for entry points. Inspect pipes, windows, and doors for any damage. If there are cracks or gaps you cannot fix, use a caulking gun to seal them and prevent bugs from entering. Once bugs get close to your home, they will find a way inside.

Additionally, do not take chances in your home. If you find a wolf spider indoors, it is recommended that you seek professional help from a pest control company specializing in spider control. They will respond quickly, inspect your house, and determine whether the spider is a lone intruder or part of an infestation. An infestation could be dangerous to both people and pets. The team will also provide advice on the best precautionary measures to take.
