What Kind of Scorpions Live in Northern California?
The western forest scorpion, also called the California forest scorpion, is one of the native species found in Northern California. It is most closely associated with wooded areas, oak habitat, forested foothills, and other places that provide more moisture and shelter than California’s desert regions.
Western forest scorpions are usually dark brown or nearly black, with broad pincers and a compact body. They spend the day beneath rocks, fallen logs, loose bark, boards, and other objects resting on the ground, then emerge after dark to hunt insects and other small prey.
Northern California also has other native scorpions in drier and more open habitats. The exact species can vary by location, and several small scorpions look similar enough that color alone is not a dependable way to identify one.
For homeowners in Chico, Red Bluff, Redding, Anderson, and nearby foothill communities, the important distinction is that a local scorpion is far more likely to be a native species such as the western forest scorpion than the medically significant Arizona bark scorpion found in southeastern California.
Are Arizona Bark Scorpions Found in Northern California?
No. Arizona bark scorpions are not established in Northern California.
Within California, this medically significant species is associated with the extreme southeastern desert near the Arizona border and Colorado River, hundreds of miles from Big Time Pest Control’s service area.
Many general scorpion guides focus on Arizona bark scorpions and other Southwestern desert species. Those guides can make a scorpion found in Chico, Red Bluff, Redding, or Anderson seem much more dangerous than it likely is.
Are Northern California Scorpions Dangerous?
A sting from a native Northern California scorpion can hurt, but serious reactions are uncommon.
The most likely symptoms are pain, redness, tenderness, or swelling around the sting site. The reaction is often compared to a bee or wasp sting, although the experience can vary by species and from one person to another.
Avoid handling a scorpion with your bare hands, and teach children not to touch one.

Why Scorpions Enter Northern California Homes

They may move inside while searching for prey, moisture, or a protected place to hide. Indoor sightings can become more noticeable during hot, dry periods when conditions around the property change.
Because scorpions are nocturnal, they remain hidden for much of the day. Around a home, common shelter can include:
- Firewood, boards, and scrap lumber
- Landscape rocks and flagstone
- Bark, leaves, and other yard debris
- Cardboard and clutter stored in garages
- Gaps beneath sheds, cabinets, and outbuildings
After entering a home, a scorpion usually looks for another dark, undisturbed space. That could be beneath a storage box, behind an object along the garage wall, inside a shoe, under furniture, or among belongings that have not been moved recently.
A scorpion found indoors is not necessarily living or breeding inside. It may simply have entered through an accessible opening.
How Scorpions Get Inside
Scorpions have flattened bodies that allow them to pass through narrow gaps.
A worn garage-door seal or exterior door sweep is one of the first places to check. Openings are often visible at the lower corners of a door, especially when the sweep no longer meets the threshold evenly.
Other possible entry points include:
- Openings around utility pipes and wiring
- Damaged crawl-space screens
- Gaps around doors and windows
- Cracks along the foundation
- Openings where siding meets the foundation
- Unsealed vents
- Firewood, boxes, and other items carried indoors

Does One Scorpion Mean You Have an Infestation?
Usually not.
Scorpions are solitary outdoor predators. Western forest scorpions normally live beneath rocks, logs, bark, and other sheltered objects rather than establishing colonies inside homes.
A scorpion found indoors is usually an accidental intruder. Repeated sightings can indicate suitable habitat close to the house, openings that allow scorpions inside, or abundant insect prey around the foundation. They do not usually mean scorpions are breeding throughout the home.
How to Make Your Property Less Inviting to Scorpions
Keeping scorpions away from the house usually requires a combination of sealing openings, reducing outdoor hiding places, correcting damp areas, and controlling the pests they hunt.
Replace Worn Door Sweeps
Inspect exterior doors and the door connecting the garage to the house. Replace sweeps and weatherstripping that do not completely seal the gap.
Pay special attention to the lower corners. Even when most of the sweep looks intact, a small opening at either end can remain accessible.
Move Firewood and Stored Materials
Keep firewood, lumber, cardboard, and other stored materials off the ground when possible. Move them away from the foundation rather than stacking them against the house.
Wear gloves when moving objects that have remained outdoors or undisturbed for an extended period.
Reduce Ground-Level Shelter
Remove loose boards, yard debris, unused containers, and other objects resting on the soil near the house.
Dense ground cover, landscape rocks, and clutter along the foundation can provide protected daytime shelter. You do not have to strip the landscaping bare, but reducing undisturbed hiding places immediately beside the structure can help.
Correct Damp Areas
Repair leaking hose bibs and irrigation problems that leave areas near the foundation consistently damp.
Scorpions do not need a plumbing leak to enter, but moist areas can support the insects and other small animals they eat.
Seal Exterior Openings
Repair damaged vent screens and seal gaps around pipes, wiring, siding, and other exterior penetrations.
Many of these improvements also support rodent exclusion, since rodents, scorpions, and other pests can use the same openings around a structure.
Adjust Outdoor Lighting
Scorpions are not attracted to porch lights, but many of the flying insects they hunt are.
Warm or yellow-toned exterior bulbs generally attract fewer insects than bright white lighting. Reducing insect activity around doors and windows can make those areas less appealing to hunting scorpions.
